The Côte des Basques surf spot in Biarritz is full of surfing history, the mellow lines were perfect for the first surfers in France at the end of the fifties and they still are fun and friendly for lots of longboarders and beginners. But saying it’s a longboard spot is dishonoring it, allthough you should surf it on the south side to find some more drive. A bigger swell can form very rippable waves and if it’s even bigger some reforms can be fast and powerful. It’s unfortunately a bit too popular and crazy busy in summer as it’s also one of the only spots around that is sheltered from the afternoon north winds. It’s still rideable on very small swells allthough it needs more than Les Landes or Anglet. There’s no beach left at high tide so get out on time to exlore other beauties in the Bask Country. You are more likely to find a parking spot upstairs. © Christina Antje Friedrich
