    Santa Cruz

A long stretch of virgin sand with plenty of peaks to keep the average surfer satisfied. The breaks in front of the village tend to become busy in the summer, but park your car, walk 1km north or south and you`ll find empty waves waiting for you. Santa Cruz is wind exposed which can spoil the...

    Praia da Matadouro

A versatile bay with several peaks that vary in quality, shape and power. A good option to get used to surfing on reef with little or no dangerous rocks sticking out. When it`s windy it`s one of the only spots in Ericeira suitable for kite – and windsurfers too.

    Praia Azul

Beautiful beach at the mouth of Rio Sizandro. Sometimes the waves here can be as stunning as the surrounding natural scenery. Always bigger than anywhere else, the sandbars of Praia Azul are a reliable option on smaller summer days. Plenty of space to launch your kite too when the Nortada starts...

    Praia do Peixe

In a solid swell a mellow righthander starts to form inside the harbour. A great spot for beginners as the jetty provides shelter from the big sneaker sets. Stunning views of Ericeira fishing port from the surf.

    Praia do Norte

A long righthander that breaks in front of Ericeira center. Mostly quite mellow, so a good option if you`re not ready for barrels yet.

    Backdoor

A hollow wave that works better on the smaller summer swells. Maxes-out when it`s double-overhead. Don`t surf with low tide, unless you want to get scratched.

    São Lourenço

The Stormriders Guide nicknames this break as `the Portuguese version of Sunset` and that gives a good description of what to expect here. This reefbreak can hold giant surf and is challenging for even the most hardcore chargers on those big N/NW days. A softer righthander breaks on the inside...

    Cave

A slab that creates waves for experienced surfers only. The heaviest wave in the Ericiera region, comparable to the hollow mutants mostly associated with Australia or Tasmania. Come and watch the show when the pros are around.

    Ribeira D`Ilhas

One of the most consistent breaks in Europe. When it`s epic, Ribeira D`Ilhas boosts a very long righthander with various playful sections: as fun as it gets! Mostly quite crowded, especially in the summer, but on an average day the wave doesn`t connect over the whole length, breaking the wave...

    Coxos

The queen of all waves in the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve and one of the most famous righthanders in Europe. Groundswells roll into the small bay and unload on a reef bottom, often with fierce power. The wave changes according to swell direction, period and wind direction, but is always fun....

    Crazy Left

A hollow left on the south side of Coxos Bay that can be as challenging as waves get. It can become crowded with bodyboarders on the epic days who drop in deeper than any surfer. Be prepared to get hammered on the bigger days.

    São Julião

São Julião works on most swell directions and tides with wave quality depending on the sandbars. A small wave spot that maxes out easily, so a good summer option! But come for dawn patrol, as the waves here don`t like wind. Show respect for the extensive crew of young local chargers.

    Pedra Branca

A very hollow left hander that breaks with speed and fierce power on a rock platform with big holes. Starts to break in small summer swell, but can hold up to 3m! It`s potential suicide at low tide.

    Furnas

Your last bet when all the other spots in the Ericeira region are huge and you don`t feel like driving. In a solid swell, a hard and quite dangerous wave breaks right in front, off the `Pico do Futuro`. Don`t go over the falls on the take-off or you might get washed up on the rocks. A smaller,...
